Biography
Charles Ellis "Chuck" Schumer is the senior United States senator from New York and has served as Senate Democratic Leader since 2017. First elected to the Senate in 1998, he previously represented New York's 9th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 1999. Born in Brooklyn, Schumer graduated from James Madison High School, earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard College, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School. At age 23, he was elected to the New York State Assembly, making him one of the youngest members ever. He is known for his Sunday press conferences and his advocacy for New York issues including 9/11 first responders, gun control, and infrastructure investment. His Long Island office in Melville serves constituents across Nassau and Suffolk counties. He has been a powerful voice for federal funding for Long Island transportation, environmental protection of the Long Island Sound, and disaster relief following Superstorm Sandy.
