Biography
Kirsten Elizabeth Gillibrand is the junior United States senator from New York, serving since January 2009 when she was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Hillary Clinton. Born in Albany, New York, she graduated from Emma Willard School, earned her B.A. from Dartmouth College, and her J.D. from UCLA School of Law. Before entering politics, she worked as an attorney in New York City and served as a Special Counsel to the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. She represented New York's 20th congressional district in the U.S. House from 2007 to 2009. Gillibrand has been a leading advocate for military sexual assault reform, paid family leave, the STOCK Act to prevent insider trading by members of Congress, and the reauthorization of the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. She ran for president in 2020. Her Long Island office in Melville provides constituent services to Nassau and Suffolk County residents. She is up for re-election in 2026.
